The term “patchwork” has always been associated with quilts that feel like a warm hug on a cold winter night. A unique way of placing different pieces of fabric and shaping them into an exquisite silhouette, patchwork has come a long way.
A centuries-old technique celebrated in modern silhouettes, patchwork has found its way into the fashion world with designers creating vibrant and colorful ensembles and accessories using the technique. Recently, Alia Bhatt celebrated the skillfulness of her lehenga which she wore for her mehendi function. Recycled heritage lehenga made from 180 color textile patches were woven together using a cross stitch stitching technique with three tar and six tar anchors.
The fusion of something old and new, Alia’s recycled lehenga has blossomed into a beautiful story of memories created one piece at a time. Keeping his daughter-in-law company, actor Neetu Kapoor also celebrated the patchwork technique in a colorful ensemble. Neetu chose a pink ghagra bandhani and a mustard bandhani saree with multicolored Marodi embroidered patchwork borders and a zardozi marodi patchwork embroidery blouse, designed by designer duo Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla.
Likewise, gracing the technique in her wedding festivities was actor Katrina Kaif. The gorgeous bride paired her Sabyasachi multicolored matka silk lehenga with a patchwork blouse for her mehendi feature. Inspired by regional folklore, crafts and nomadic culture of India, the blouse featured hand fringed embellishments, brass sequins and floral designs.
With the onset of wedding season, the technique has certainly caught the attention of brides and bridesmaids alike. Although the more colorful the set, the more flamboyant the set turns out, but if you are someone who likes subtlety, you can opt for a monochrome or tone-on-tone patchwork. Fashion designer Anita Dongre’s ivory lehenga set worn by actor Shraddha Kapoor is a timeless design to flaunt at a daytime wedding. Depicting a wild heron on a light background, this lehenga set is a masterpiece of delicate patchwork.
But why should girls have fun, right? Giving a modern twist to handmade Indian fabrics and using it as a patchwork technique with thread embroidery is the ace of fashion designer Suneet Varma. A youthful look reminiscent of 70s movies and music that is a huge inspiration in Suneet’s work, the jacket was recently spotted on actor Shahid Kapoor. Suave in appearance, the jacket added a pop of color to Shahid’s monochromatic look.
If there is one fabric with which designers and brands love to experiment with the patchwork technique, it is denim. From accessories to clothing, denim patchwork designs have been a favorite among all age groups. Actor Kamal Haasan’s khadi brand, House of Khaddar, showcased a patchwork of denim in coordinated ensembles on the runway at Paris Fashion Week 2022.
They may be little fabrics put together, but each piece tells a story. So this festive season, celebrate yourself and your love for patchwork in contemporary silhouettes with a hint of drama.
