Editor’s Notes: COMME des GARÇONS ‘workwear-centric HOMME subtag – not to be confused with the adventurous main fare of COMME des GARÇONS HOMME PLUS – may or may not yet be run by Junya Watanabe, but she clearly shares her tastes given of his latest shoe collaboration. .

First seen during the brand’s presentation at the showroom in January, the COMME des GARÇONS HOMME x New Balance 57/40 is about to hit stores. It’s as basic as it is basic, which is exactly what Junya likes.

The many New Balance ties from designer COMME des GARÇONS often lean towards simplicity, keeping the basic shape of the shoe intact while choosing to add a logo here or a deliberately bland colourway there.

Nothing wrong with being basic, however, and Watanabe knows the quiet strength of unsuspecting versatile clothing. Its seasonal collections embody this philosophy with flawless essentials enhanced with premium workmanship and stylistic flip flops (see: Raised Liner Jacket or Ripstop Panel Shirt)

Even though MEN’s New Balance 57/40 is not a product of Watanabe’s vision (CdG is silent about the behind-the-scenes creatives developing their clothes), it fits that mold. Everything is all black, from the black suede GORE-TEX lined upper to the matching midsole, with only a CdGH branded tongue tag to break up the monochrome frontage.

The 57/40 has enjoyed a relatively low profile in recent months as silhouettes like the 327 and 2002r continue to receive the lion’s share of attention. But occasional collaborations, like this one, and new colourways keep the chunky lifestyle shoe in the mix a bit.
