Famous Japanese fashion designer Hanae Mori has died aged 96, her office said Thursday. The designer was famous for his movies and also designed Japanese Empress Masako’s wedding dress.

Japan’s famed fashion designer Hanae Mori, who was popular for her elegant, iconic butterfly designs and numerous movie fashions, has died at the age of 96, her office said Thursday. Mori was also popular for designing the Empress of Japan’s wedding dress. Throughout his career, Mori has embodied Japan’s rise as a fashionable and modern nation.

When Empress Masako of Japan married the then-crowned prince, Emperor Naruhito in 1993, she wore a Hanae Mori wedding dress adorned with rose petal designs. Mori also designed uniforms for bank clerks, Japan Airlines flight attendants, high school students, and the Japanese team at the Barcelona Olympics. While the uniforms may not have been flamboyant like her runway designs, they were still fashionable, tasteful, and appropriate to their roles.

Hanae Mori’s death comes less than a week after Japan lost another world famous Japanese designer, Issey Miyake. He breathed his last on August 5. Mori, a pioneer of Japanese designers, opened her studio in 1951. She had her first show in New York in 1965 which was acclaimed as “East meets West”.

Net worth and personal life of Hanae Mori: The net worth of the fashion designer at the time of her death is said to be around $1.5 million, approximately. She is survived by her two sons, one daughter, seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Mori’s husband, Ken Mori, died in 1996.
