Youngstown State’s men’s and women’s cross country programs are scheduled to compete in the coast-to-coast battle at the Beantown Invitational at Boston College on Friday.

The race will take place at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. The featured women’s 5k is scheduled to start at noon, followed by the featured men’s 8k at 12:30 p.m. Then a combined open 5k (M&W) will take place at 1:15 p.m.

The invite should feature multiple nationally ranked teams. On the women’s side, #19 Syracuse, #20 Harvard, #23 Gonzaga and #36 Penn State are set to compete. On the men’s side, No. 12 Harvard, No. 18 Gonzaga, No. 19 Syracuse and No. 38 Virginia are ready to race. Many regionally ranked teams will also participate in the invite. This event is one of the nation’s top cross country invitees for varsity teams.

Last outing

The Penguins last played in their season opener at the Penn State Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Sept. 16.

In the men’s 5.2 mile, three Penguins finished in the top 50. Junior Tycoon was the first to cross the finish line for the Penguins with a time of 26:19.2 to finish 27th. Junior Ryan Meadows was right behind Coon, running a 26:22.8 for 31st place. Complete the top 50, junior Tyler Clark clocked 26:59.3 in his effort for 50th place. Overall, the men finished in seventh place with 192 team points.

On the women’s side, seniors mackenzie scott finished with a time of 22:47.8 in the 6km to earn 43rd place. Behind her was a freshman Molly Hopple who clocked 23:10.8 to place 52nd. The YSU women’s team placed seventh overall with 194 team points.

After the Penguins’ performance at PSU, the Penguins swept the Horizon League freshman runners of the week. Hopple was named #HLXC Freshman Runner of the Week, while Formica was named #HLXC Freshman Runner of the Week.


YSU will travel to the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on September 30 in South Bend, Ind. at the Burke Golf Course on the Notre Dame campus.

The invitation will feature the blue, open and gold divisions of the women’s 5k and men’s 5 mile. The blue race for the women’s 5k will start at 10:30 a.m., followed by the men’s 5 mile at 11:15 p.m. After that, the open division of races will start at noon for women and 12:30 for men. The competition will end with the Gold Race. The women’s 5k will start at 1:30 p.m. and the men’s 5 mile will end the day at 2:30 p.m.
