While the best players in the sneaker space are dedicating time and resources to developing new products within their internal teams, nearly all have turned to associates at some point in their NIKE history. Inc., adidas, New Balance, Reebok and others have done it, and possibly more over the past four years.
These brands ‘unmistakably keep the lights on’ with major iterations of the New Balance 992, Nike Air Max 95, and Reebok Kamikaze II, but they are relying on special, often limited, projects to re-energize certain models or gain general attention. for themselves. Despite the public’s perception of a given collaboration, joint projects have become an integral part of the sneaker equation, no longer being an exception. And while some partnerships have crossed the line between “refreshing” and “overdone” very finely, others have pointedly abandoned any concern for what made collaborations magical before the internet really took off.
Thursday, June 24, Virgil Abloh unveiled the handles of a three-way collaboration between Louis Vuitton, Off-White and NIKE, Inc. The canvas? : The Nike Air Force 1. Even if it makes perfect sense for one of the brand’s most influential collaborators. to rework an iconic silhouette as it nears its 40th birthday, the result quickly drew criticism for its resemblance to bootlegs and customs ridiculed in recent decades; to be loud; and to build on patterns already seen. Did anyone need this collection (which would include 21 pairs)? No. Will it sell? Yes. Scarcity kicks in, but if there was a moment for the consumer to draw a limit on what they would spend their money on, Abloh’s latest push provides the perfect opportunity to do so. Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack x Dior sneaker collaboration – once dubbed “lazy” and “uninspired” – also offers an opportunity to wake up sneaker producers.
Playing the “gatekeeper” of collaborations seems tight, but at the rate things are going, how long will it be before sneakers feature more logos than design details at NASCAR? When the resources are brought together, amazing products, previously out of the question, can be the result. But when the design of a shoe seems to play a secondary or tertiary role in relation to the placement and the cost of co-branding, it is perfectly reasonable to question the state of the collaborations.
