This month, may the force be with Disney+, which celebrates spring with an abundance of original movies and new TV series. One of them is Disney+’s “Sneakerella,” a tween-focused tale that sees a talented teenager fantasize about designing sneakers for athletic royalty.

Directed by Elizabeth Alien Rosenbaum, the film is set in New York City’s vibrant street sneaker subculture. “Sneakerella” is a high-energy musical film that puts a contemporary spin on the classic “Cinderella” fairy tale. The film premieres exclusively on Disney+ on May 13.

This fantastical tale, told sparingly by fairy godfather Gustavo Juan Chioran, begins in the diverse neighborhood of Queens. Kind-hearted, creative teenager El, played by Chosen Jacobs, loves sneakers almost as much as he loves his community. The perfect pair of sneakers haunts his dreams and guides his life. He believes the right shoes can make him fly, a concept illustrated in a dreamy amalgamation of colorful mixed media and live action, drawn vividly through sketches and songs.

He hides his artistic talent from his overworked stepfather and two mean-spirited stepbrothers who constantly thwart any opportunity that comes his way. When El meets Kira King, the fiercely independent daughter of legendary basketball star and sneaker mogul Darius King, sparks fly as the two bond over their mutual affinity for sneakers. With a little help from his best friend and a dash of Fairy Godfather magic, El finds the courage to use his talent to pursue his dream of becoming a “legit” sneaker designer in the industry. El is now ready to put on his shoelaces and dream big.
