The Outer Banks Woman’s Club has set a goal of recycling 500 pounds of plastic bags by December 1.

The club solicits the support of the community by collecting and depositing plastic bags at the following locations:

  • YMCA (3000 S. Croatan Highway, Nags Head)
  • The Baum Center (309 Mustian Street, Kill Devil Hills)
  • Joe Lamb Realty (4607 N. Croatan Highway, Kitty Hawk)

All plastic bags must be clean, dry and free from food residues. Club members also requested that the bags be flattened before putting them in the designated receptacles.

At the end of the six month period, Trex Company, Inc. will recycle the bags to a bench that will be located within the OBX community. Trex Company, Inc. is the world’s largest manufacturer of composite wood-replacement decks, railings and other outdoor composite items made from recycled materials.

Recycling plastic bags reduces the consumption of energy, raw materials, pollution and waste produced by Americans. It also offers several other environmental benefits.

Energy saving : The process of making plastic bags is long and complicated. Therefore, it consumes a significant amount of energy. Recycling plastic bags also consumes energy, as they have to be shredded, cleaned, melted and re-molded, but the energy required is relatively less than that required to make fresh plastic bags.

According to a study, recycling 1 ton of plastic bags saves the equivalent of 5,774 kilowatts / hour in electrical energy!

Reduces Oil: Consumption The plastic needed to make plastic bags is made from natural gas or crude oil derivatives. This means that the more plastic bags you make, the more non-renewable fossil fuels you consume.

However, recycling plastic bags can significantly reduce oil consumption. According to a study, recycling 1 ton of plastic bags saves the equivalent of 16.3 barrels of crude oil.

Reduces waste: Since plastic bags do not biodegrade, they still exist in landfills and oceans. However, recycling used plastic bags significantly reduces the amount of waste that goes to landfills. This helps reduce soil and water pollution, as landfills play a major role in destroying our environment.

Encourages sustainable use: Recycling plastic bags promotes their prudent and sustainable use. Today, recycling plastic bags is easier than ever, as up to 80% of Americans have access to recycling programs. However, although plastic bag recycling facilities are available, the amount recycled is still relatively small and needs significant improvement.
