Fashion designer and creative director Nicola Formichetti has worked with Lady Gaga for over a decade. From her famous meat dress to the arrival of the Grammys ship, he and Gaga have collaborated to create some of her most iconic looks.

One of their biggest collaborations was on looks from Gaga’s pioneering album, âBorn This Way,â which is celebrating its 10th anniversary today. âThe album was all about empowerment. It was about freedom of expression and the appropriation of our rights, âFormichetti says.
He remembers the 2010 MTV Awards, when the singer showed up in that meaty dress and sang a snippet of the titular song. âIt was almost a prequel to what was to come,â he says.
For the âBorn This Wayâ era, Formichetti and Gaga wanted to create a fearless and powerful aesthetic. âIt was about taking power, dressing to the extreme and showing that it was real, but half-fantastic,â Formichetti says. “The album was about symbolism and iconography, appropriating and changing your perspective.”
In honor of ten years of âBorn This Way,â Formichetti breaks down her favorite designs from the era below, sharing her personal favorites and the stories behind the outfits.
